A friend of mine recently attacked me for having been a Sociology major. I explained that I was very happy with it, as so many interesting courses were in that department (women's studies, race relations, criminology, etc), and also linked to numerous related areas: psychology, history, architecture, art, film. She said, "but you could have learned all of those subjects by reading." as opposed to what she considers valuable STEM (and pre-professional law, med, etc. courses). I admit she has a point, but there are experiences to gain in college that are different from being an autodidact. She seems to think my studies were some sort of decadent waste of time. I'm all for humanities! Not a decadent waste of time.
