Great piece, Ben. I think that when now, as an adult, I know I am watching a horror film, it scares me less than when the frights are unexpected. Some years ago, I caught The Night of the Hunter on television, and was up the entire night, fearful of preacher Robert Mitchum and his hand tattoos. It is an exquisite black and white art film, directed by Charles Laughton, but it left me terrified. That said, it ranks as one of my favorite movies ever. By the way, I had Paul Rozin as my professor of Abnormal Psychology.
