Great piece, Mai. There is a profound difference between mere obedience and actual respect. Like you, I had parents who commanded obedience. I once had a disagreement with the Vice Principal of my school and I will never forget my mother saying, "Elizabeth, it doesn't matter if you are right or wrong. He is the authority and you have to obey."
