Her parents had converted because of the Nazis. However, as smart as she was, and having been born in Eastern Europe, I would have thought she would have picked up on it. I'm sure, like with you, many people would have assumed she was Jewish despite her ignorance of the fact that both of her parents were born and raised Jewish.
