I lost many friends to AIDS during the late 80s and 90s. The Anvil. Mineshaft and some similar clubs closed during the height of the epidemic. Between the omnipresent drugs and the group sex, many people were probably infected in these S & M clubs. A dear friend, now deceased, used to give me frequent updates of the activities and door policies.
