I love Call Me By Your Name, but many of my friends, both gay and straight, were bothered by the age difference, not the nine years, but the fact that Timothy Chalamet looked like a child, even though he wasn't. Yet these same friends adored Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which was also excellent, but they didn't mind the fact of Adele Haenel's character being 16 or 17 while Naomi Merchant plays a woman in her 20s, but this is probably because Haenel didn't look like a teenager, and despite her exceptional acting, the actress was 30 when she shot the film.
