I'm so glad you read and appreciated my Leo Grande piece, James. I do think that even though we are accustomed to seeing the vastly older man/younger woman scenario, people would have reacted negatively to Leo Grande even if the older man was as likable as Tom Hanks. There is a change in temperature. For example, Audrey Hepburn was almost always cast opposite men easily old enough to be her father, and I don't think anything was mentioned at the time. Gary Cooper. Fred Astaire, Cary Grant, Rex Harrison... But I believe that if a young actress today was constantly cast opposite vastly older men, there would be a reaction. Both actors in Leo Grande were excellent, and it could have even been a two-hander in the theater. However, because money was changing hands, the gorgeous young man wasn't engaged in an act of pure kindness or love. And I think I would have also felt that way if it were a story with two men, as well as the older man, younger woman version. I think the viewers found the scenario acceptable only because a woman was the older character and not a man, straight or gay.
