In recent years, women were being propelled to the forefront...more females in universities and grad schools, etc. But lately, a horrible right-wing backlash is limiting women by taking away their reproductive rights. Thinking about your tutu clad niece, perhaps if she had stuck with ballet, she'd be faring well financially, as it's one profession where ballerinas are paid as well, if not better, than their male counterparts. (And unfortunately, a profession which demands a very early retirement age.)
