It is tragic when a child goes missing, although I am not at all certain that more children go missing than in the past. I definitely did the helicopter thing with my own kids when they were young. But I also remember as a young child myself being alone in parks and on buses and in candy stores and quite enjoying that freedom. Maybe I was lucky, but the worst thing I remember happening was breaking a toe when a heavy door hit my foot in an empty public bathroom. Certainly, my parents were more ignorant of child theft, abscondment, and molestation than parents are today, but are these heinous acts actually more frequent now?
