In 2021, I worked with a small independent publisher on a non-fiction picture and short essay book: "The Masked Hatter- Pandemic Style on the Upper West Side." I thought my New York City neighborhood bookstores would be delighted to carry it as the images are all local and the subject was newsworthy, but they (five bookshops) said they only sold books distributed by Ingram. I was shocked, especially as one is a branch of the Strand, which buys and sells used books. That said, my book was sold in several gift shops, in the New York Historical Society's store, and in several non-NY bookstores and one actual NYC book store. who didn't seem to have that Ingram stickiness. It was also sold online. But that Ingram attachment really surprised me.
