This is smart, interesting, and clear, David. That said, this approach somewhat removes the joys derived from reading for pleasure (and shouldn't writers also read for pleasure?). I'm also wondering if each read with all the annotations will take an extraordinary amount of time. For example, at present I am reading the lengthy Vanity Fair and I could spend months jotting notes on Thackeray's delightful prose style, character development, and historical significance. But I don't want to, because then I won't be able to read anything else.
