You make some good points, Jason, and it is true that our culture has become more and more beauty based with the spread of social media. And suddenly real estate brokers have to look super sexy to sell a house. But I am not sure attractiveness is all that influential when it comes to writers. Most writers are average looking. Yes, there are some successful stunners out there like the married couple of Siri Hustvedt and Paul Auster, Lady Antonia Fraser, Zadie Smith, John Grisham, and Jennifer Egan, but they all have something else in common: extraordinary talent. When I was a young journalist and interviewing prominent people, I was always pleased to do a successful "phoner," knowing that the subject was not distracted by my admittedly good looks and was responding to my admittedly good questions.
